Minutes of the Fall 2001 Joint Meeting of the NJJC Editorial and NJCA Executive Boards

This joint meeting of the Editorial Advisory Board of The New Jersey Journal of Communication and the Executive Board of the New Jersey Communication Association took place on October 12, 2001, 12:00-2:00pm, at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, New Jersey

  1. Call to Order

    The meeting was called to order at 12:30pm.

  2. Approval of the Minutes of the Spring 2001 Meeting

    The minutes of the Spring 2001 meeting were approved unanimously.

  3. NJJC Editor's Report

    Gary P. Radford, Fairleigh Dickinson University, presented the NJJC Editor's report.

    Acceptance Rates: As of October 12, 2001, the NJJC has received and processed 225 manuscripts (volumes 1.1 - 9.2 inclusive). Of these, 104 have been accepted for publication; an overall acceptance rate of 46%.

    Spring 2002 Issue: The Spring 2002 issue will represent the 10th volume of NJJC. The issue is full, and will contain a special article on the events of September 11, 2001, with contributions by Gary Gumpert (Queens College), James Carey (Columbia University), Paul Thaler (Mercy College), Carol Wilder (New School University), Ray Gozzi (Ithaca College), and Susan Drucker (Hofstra University).

  4. NJCA President's Report

    Don R. Swanson, Monmouth University, presented the NJCA President's report.

    Financial Report: NJCA received a total of $9,460 in income from the 2001 conference held at Monmouth ($3,000 from Comcast sponsorship, $1,000 from the SCILS Alumni Association at Rutgers University, and $5,460 from registration and membership fees). Conference expenses totaled $7,043, leaving a final balance of $2, 417.00.

    Total NJCA monies are as follows:

    At Rider University $3, 962.16
    At Rowan University $3, 268.72
    At Monmouth University $2, 417.00
    TOTAL $9, 647.88

    Membership Report: Sherry Wien, Monmouth University, reported that 168 people attended the 2001 NJCA conference at Monmouth University with 134 new or renewed memberships (75 students and 59 regular memberships).

  5. NJCA 1st Vice-President's Report

    Jennifer K. Lehr, Fairleigh Dickinson University, gave the NJCA 1st Vice-President's report.

    The date of the 2002 NJCA conference has been set for Saturday April 13, 2002 and will be held at in the Mansion Building on the Madison campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. A Call for Papers has been distributed and the deadline for submissions is December 14th, 2001.

  6. Old Business

    No old business was conducted.

  7. New Business

    Nomination of Dennis K. Mumby and Hester Coan to the Editorial Advisory Board

    Gary Radford nominated two candidates to join the NJJC Editorial Advistory Board.

    Dennis K. Mumby (Ph. D., Rutgers University) is a Professor of Organizational Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Communication and Power in Organizations (Ablex, 1988) and the editor of Narrative and Social Control: Critical Perspectives (Sage, 1993). Dr. Mumby's research focuses on the relationship between power and discourse in institutional contexts. He has been a reviewer with the NJJC since 1993.

    Hester Coan (Ph. D., Rutgers University) is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University. After completing her Ph. D., Dr. Coan spent two years at the NASA Ames Research Center in California completing a post-doctoral fellowship in the areas of organizational communication and human factors. Specifically, Dr. Coan examined the role of blame attribution in the context of professional conduct in high stakes situations.

    The nominations of Dr. Mumby and Dr. Coan were approved unanimously.

  8. Time and Place of Spring 2002 Meeting

    The Spring 2002 meeting of the NJCA Executive Board and the NJJC Editorial Advisory Board will be held at Fairleigh Dickinson University, date TBA.

  9. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30pm.
