- The meeting was called to order at 12:45pm.
- The agenda was unanimously adopted.
- G. Radford thanked everyone for coming and also thanked J. Lehr for
assistance in organizing the luncheon. Thanks were also given for Dean M.
Green of Fairleigh Dickinson University for hosting the meeting and
subsidizing the luncheon.
- The minutes for the meeting of October 20, 1999 were approved as revised.
- Dean M. Green welcomed everyone to Fairleigh Dickinson and spoke about the
charter meeting of the NJJC held in 1992 at William Paterson University,
pointing out that many of the people at today's meeting were also present at
the charter meeting. He also said that FDU was pleased to play an active role
in supporting the journal and the association.
- G. Radford gave the Editor's Progress Report. As of March 10, 2000 the
NJJC had received and processed 179 manuscripts (volumes 1.1 - 7.2 inclusive).
Of these, 77 have been accepted for publication; an overall acceptance rate of
43%.
- G. Radford reported on the status of the NJJC account housed at William
Paterson University. Upon moving from William Paterson to Fairleigh Dickinson
last September, Radford had been asked to close the William Paterson account
by spending the balance on journal related expenses, which Radford agreed to
do. However, in so doing, Radford discovered that the journal account had
significantly less money in it ($88.00) than was reported at the Fall 1999
Editorial Board meeting ($2,004.00). This was due to monies being withdrawn
from the account without Radford's knowledge. During the lifetime of the
account, Radford had only made deposits to the account and was not allowed to
make withdrawals without the signature of the Dean and Chair. Radford reported
that the remaining $88.00 had been put toward the cost of printing the Fall
1999 issue of the journal and the account at William Paterson has been closed.
All monies received from library and other subscriptions are now being
deposited in the NJCA account at Rider University.
Account History at William Paterson University: October 20, 1999 -
March 10, 2000:
Balance (10/20/99) - $2,004.00
Revised Balance - $88.00
Expenditures (Printing of Fall 1999 issue of NJJC) - $88.00
Final Balance (3/10/2000) - $00.00
J. Millen then reported on the status of the NJCA account at Rider
University:
Starting Balance - $6,482.41
NJJC Printing (Vol. 7, No. 2, Fall 1999) - $1355.00
Louise Cooper (proofreading) - $500.00
Fall NJCA Meeting - $110.25
IRS - $150.00
Final Balance (as of 3/10/00) - $4,367.16
- C. Dell distributed a proposed Advertising Rate Sheet for NJJC. There was
a discussion about charging more for front or back inside covers, and it was
decided to leave the cost the same as for full page advertisements, with
inside covers being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. C. Dell
encouraged all present to seek advertising commitments from their respective
institutions. G. Radford thanked C. Dell for his work in developing the rate
sheet.
- G. Radford reported that the NJJC Special Issue: Intellectual Roots of
Media Ecology, edited by C. Lum of William Paterson University was at the
printers and due to be published in time for the 4th Annual NJCA Conference at
Rowan University. He thanked C. Lum for his role as guest editor. There are
currently no additional special issues forthcoming.
- J. Millen (NJCA President) presided over the next part of the meeting
which dealt with NJCA business. He distributed a "Did You Know?" fact sheet
about NJCA.
- T. Gencarelli, D. Swanson, and J. Millen were appointed to serve as the
nominating committee which was charged with drawing up a slate of officers to
be voted upon at the 4th Annual Conference. The question was raised about the
advisability of the Membership Director serving a two year term for
continuity. J. Millen reported that his secretary was willing to maintain the
membership database. She will be asked if she would be willing to be nominated
to this office.
- M. Itzkowitz, 1st VP, reported that all is in readiness for the 4th Annual
Conference, April 8, 2000. Those present agreed that the offerings presented
in the conference program were of high quality and that the program itself was
very well designed.
- The 5th Annual Conference, 2001 will be hosted by Monmouth University,
organized by D. Swanson, 2nd VP. D. Swanson asked for programming suggestions.
M. Radford suggested that there be a roundtable for research in progress; J.
Pollock suggested more Lambda Pi Eta involvement; S. Jasko asked for more
undergraduate participation; and there was a discussion on ways to get people
from surrounding areas, such as Pennsylvania, involved.
- There was discussion regarding the hosting of the 6th Annual Conference,
2002, with agreement that it would be hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University
and that J. Lehr would be nominated as incoming 2nd VP. Having the conference
hosted by FDU would provide a central New Jersey location and would also
provide the opportunity for increased corporate involvement through
cooperation with the FDU Corporate Communication Institute.
- J. Pollock offered to host the 7th Annual Conference, 2003, at The College
of New Jersey.
- S. Jasko noted that there will be a meeting of state communication
associations at the Eastern Communication Association conference in
Pittsburgh, on Thursday, April 27th, at 5:30pm.
- L. Strate led a discussion on the possibility of collaboration on
publications between NYSCA (New York State Communication Association) and
NJCA. He will prepare a proposal for consideration at the fall board meeting.
T. Gencarelli announced that the deadline for the NYSCA call for papers was
being extended to May 20th, 2000 and invited the board's active participation.
- G. Radford offered to host the fall meeting again at FDU which was agreed
to by those present.
- The meeting was adjourned at 2:40pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Marie L. Radford, Secretary
