Minutes of the Business Meeting held at the 4th Annual Conference of the New Jersey Communication Association

The meeting was called to order at 12:55pm by Jonathan Millen (Rider University), President.

Welcome and Thanks

President Jonathan Millen welcomed all in attendance to the 4th Annual conference of the NJCA. He thanked everyone who contributed to the success of this conference, especially all those who attended and all the presenters. He especially thanked Dean Libro of the College of Communication at Rowan for generously supporting the conference. President Millen also expressed gratitude to conference sponsors: the SCILS Alumni Association, Rutgers University, Dean Gus Friedrich of Rutgers, William Paterson University, Rider University, Fordham University, and Monmouth University. He thanked the exhibitors and publishers from around the area. Special thanks were extended to Martin Itzkowitz and the staff at Rowan for coordinating and planning the conference and to members of the NJCA Executive Board for their support, especially Gary Radford (Fairleigh Dickinson University), Marie Radford (Pratt Institute), Vince Fitzgerald (Mt. St. Vincents), Susan Barnes (Fordham), and Past Presidents Thom Gencarelli (Montclair) and Susan Jasko (California University of PA).
Minutes
The minutes of the Business Meeting of the 3rd Annual NJCA conference, held at Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ on April 10, 1999, were approved unanimously.
Announcement -New York State Communication Association (NYSCA)
Past President Thom Gencarelli announced that the New York State Communication Association would be holding its annual conference from September 22-24, 2000 at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, NY. He invited all NJCA members to attend the conference and to submit papers. Deadline for submission of papers is May 20, 2000.
Awards
Susan Barnes (Fordham) announced that this year there were three times the number of papers submitted by students than ever before and that the task of choosing the top student papers was quite difficult. She presented certificates to the student award winners.

Undergraduate winner: Regina Skorge (Kean) for "Gendered Childhood Socialization Through Play Interactions."

Graduate winner: Jessica L. Davis (University of Pennsylvania) for "Positioning Africa within the Global Information Infrastructure: A Plan of Action."
Election
President Millen thanked the nominating committee for their work in preparing the state of officers, presented the slate to the membership, and asked for nominations from the floor. The slate was approved unanimously. The 2000-2001 Executive Board of the NJCA is:

President-Elect Takes the Gavel
Jonathan Millen turned the gavel over to Martin Itzkowitz, President-Elect, with "pride, trust, and great enthusiasm" and congratulated him on an excellent conference. Martin Itzkowitz again thanked all who had helped to make the conference a success, especially Dean Libro for financial support; Julie Haynes for help with registration and conference packets; Julia Chang, Bursar; Jessica Claire for help with signage; Mary Lee Donahue, site coordinator; Pat Birmingham, secretary; SCILS Alumni Association of Rutgers for financial support; and Thom Gencarelli, Susan Jasko, and Jonathan Millen for help in planning the conference. Two NJCA initiatives he hopes to move forward are: 1) to involve more K-12 educators and 2) to provide outreach to the business community.
Presentation of Plaque
Jonathan Millen was called to the podium and Martin Itzkowitz presented him with an engraved plaque recognizing his leadership as the 3rd President of NJCA. Jonathan Millen offered his thanks to everyone in attendance for their support and enthusiasm.
5th Annual Conference Announcement
Jonathan Millen announced that the 5th NJCA Conference would be held at Monmouth University on March 31, 2001. The conference planner is Don Swanson (Monmouth). Jonathan Millen urged the membership to help provide theme ideas, propose panels, submit papers, and be involved in organizing a successful conference.
Adjournment
The business meeting was adjourned at 1:20.
