Scenes from the Inaugural Conference

A gorgeous spring day at Montclair University, NJ was the scene of the inaugural NJCA conference. Keynote speakers were Dr. Neil Postman, New York University and Dr. Stanley Deetz, Rutgers University and President, ICA. The NJCA was made "official": a constitution and by-laws enacted and officers elected. A range of panels, discussions, and presentations then followed. Susan Jasko, Montclair State University. President, NJCA Susan Jasko , Montclair State University, was elected President of the NJCA and accepts the honorary gavel of office.
Susan Jasko, Thomas Gencarelli, and Gary Radford -- three of the founders of the NJCA Susan Jasko, Thomas Gencarelli of Montclair State University and Gary Radford, Editor of the NJCA Journal, energized by the day's events, were the nucleus whose result was the founding of the NJCA. All were recognized and credited for their efforts in getting the organization going.

Marie Radford, NJCA Recorder and Dr. Stanley Deetz, Rutgers University and President, ICA Marie Radford, NJCA Recorder and Dr. Stanley Deetz, Keynote Speaker. Dr. Deetz gave a lively and provocative talk on the potential of the Communication discipline to address fundamental social problems.

Neil Postman, giving the Keynote address at the NJCA inaugural conferenence, 426/97 Dr. Neil Postman, New York University, spoke to the conference. A power failure on the Montclair University campus necessitated moving outdoors. It was a beautiful day, however, and Dr. Postman's presentation was characteristically profound, amusing and thought-provoking.
